In 1947, college and U.S. Navy friends Frank Burns, “Nundy” Bongartz, and Robert Cone purchased land in Winhall, Vermont and built what would become Skylight Ski Lodge. What began as a shared post-war dream quickly revealed itself as a calling for Frank, who fell in love with the lodge lifestyle and committed himself to keeping Skylight thriving.
In 1963, Frank married Jean, who, fittingly, had been a longtime Skylight guest for years before becoming part of its story. Together, they raised their two daughters at the lodge and lovingly ran Skylight until 2002, welcoming generations of skiers and travelers along the way.
Skylight was never just a place to stay—it was a place to belong. Known for its relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, it was not uncommon for Manhattan media moguls or Carnegie Hall pianists to find themselves seated at communal dinner tables, cheerfully swapping ski stories with teachers, art students, construction workers—anyone who shared a love of the mountains and the sport.
As times changed, so did the parties and the pace of life, but the spirit of Skylight remained constant. It has always been a place where strangers become friends, stories are shared, and lasting bonds are formed—both on and off the slopes.
Today, we invite you to make your own memories and share your stories, making Skylight a part of your traditions for years to come.
The Skylight Ski Lodge is a thoughtfully restored Vermont retreat—completely renovated and intentionally designed to be far more than a typical rental. Every update was made with comfort, connection, and four-season enjoyment in mind.
The lodge underwent a full renovation completed in February 2015, with the exterior re-sided and painted shortly before—setting the tone for the elevated, welcoming experience guests enjoy throughout the home.
The third floor features two expansive primary suites, each offering spa-like bathrooms with high-end fixtures, a steam shower, and a jetted Jacuzzi tub—perfect for unwinding after a long day on the slopes or trails.
On the second floor, five additional bedrooms and two oversized bathrooms provide generous accommodations for large groups, extended families, and multi-generational stays—allowing everyone space to relax while still staying connected under one roof.
At the heart of the home is a chef’s kitchen, outfitted with a commercial-grade oven and stove, designed for cooking together and hosting memorable meals. The adjoining dining area flows seamlessly into the great room, filled with natural light from soaring windows and anchored by a dramatic stone fireplace —an inviting space to gather after a day outdoors.
A cozy library and media room offers a quieter retreat with a large TV, fireplace, and dedicated desk—ideal for movie nights, reading, or catching up on work. For added fun and fitness, the space also features an NFL Blitz arcade game, a curated selection of board games for all ages, and a Peloton bike, giving guests the option to play, unwind, or get a workout in—no matter the season.
Outside, the property truly shines. The lodge is surrounded by National Forest land, offering privacy, natural beauty, and direct access to the outdoors. Sitting directly on the VAST trail system, Skylight is an ideal base for snowmobilers and winter adventurers alike.
Guests can enjoy a large outdoor grill, a Solo Stove firepit with generous seating, and a covered outdoor pavilion—perfect for storing snowmobiles, ATVs, bikes, and gear throughout the year.
Skylight Ski Lodge was built to bring people together—whether for ski weekends, summer adventures, family reunions, milestone celebrations, or simply time away in the mountains. It’s a home designed to be lived in, shared, and remembered.
